411 Seniors Centre is looking for volunteers who would like working with motivated people, learning about our work, and getting unique insights into the non-profit sector. Volunteering is a great way to build connections, gain valuable skills in the workplace, and help build a brighter future for older adults.
Information and Referral (I&R) Advisor Volunteer, job description:
Responsibilities:
- Uphold 411’s policies and organizational values
- Be familiar with the contents of the I&R Volunteer Manual. Follow the duties and procedures outlined
- Ensure clients are informed of programs and services available to them
- Provide information and make appropriate referrals for clients through one-on-one discussion
- Liaise for clients with agencies by telephone, email and/or in writing
- Assist clients with completion of forms and applications, such as pension benefits, housing, bus pass program, etc.
- Provide a brief summary of each I&R appointment in the I&R Intake Form
- Attend workshops and trainings
- Complete the mentoring training program
- Model and maintain healthy boundaries
Time of Commitment:
- A commitment of 4 hours per week is required (10:00 AM – 2:00 PM)
Qualifications:
- Willing to undergo the application and volunteer screening process
- Have knowledge on (or willingness to learn) government benefits, programs, services in the Lower Mainland; including how to access these resources is a great asset
- Great written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work as part of a team with volunteers, clients, and staff
- Able to speak multiple languages is an asset
- Calm and able to prioritize when faced with multiple demands at once
- Comfortable or willing to learn to use computers, adaptive technologies, and basic office equipment, such as a photocopier
- Familiar with or willingness to learn basic Microsoft Office, such as MS Word and Excel
- Preference given to those who are 55+ years old

Staff Support and Communication:
- I&R Advisor volunteers have access to ongoing staff support and resources throughout their volunteer term
- I&R Advisor volunteers will report to Senior Services Manager and they will be available to problem-solve and share ideas around any challenges volunteers may experience
- Information sharing about opportunities, volunteer workshops and events are sent out by email, with hard copies posted on the bulletin board
